Old Time Radio in Syracuse

Who remembers the two main radio stations we used to listen to? ...the DJ's? 1260 WNDR, 149(1490) WOLF. How about Dandy Dan Leonard, Jim O'Brien, Jolly Rolly Fowler, Bud Ballou, Mad Man Morton, Happy Jack McNamee, Pete Cavanaugh, Bob Dell, Joey Reynolds.
WNDR was broadcast from a small building on Andrews Rd off Jamesville Rd in Dewitt. WNDR was a sponsor for the Teen Canteen. How about 3 Rivers Inn and Sports'O'Rama in Mattydale for all our musical heros from the 60's?
How about the Syracuse Nats basketball games at the War Memorial. Jim McKechnie was the announcer for them. Who remembers Baron Damon from local television fame? How about Kuela, Fran and Ollie? How about Archibald Stadium at SU. Remember the concrete "seats"! I remember seeing Roger Staubach when they played Navy. Did anyone go to the Pig Stand which is where the route 5/481 interchange is now in Dewitt? Remember they used to always flood out when Butternut Creek overflowed in the spring. I know you do!!!

Ice skating by the Fire Hall, and the Wellwood pond? Your dad to get the car started at 35 below? Candy dots, jiffy pop, nickel nips & the ice cream man? Not having a TV - and listening to Amos & Andy, Big John & Sparky and The Shadow? Getting a TV - and watching Kukle, Fran & Ollie, I Remember Momma, Roy & Dale, and Hop-Along Cassidy? (check Michael Crolick's shirt in the '52 picture) Climbing trees, DDT, the old Bahouth Building, white bucks, 3-D movies (and comics), roller skates (with keys), sky writing, tire chains and seeing the Northern Lights - from Fayetteville? Doing the bunny hop in gym? When almost every guy carried a pocket knife to school? - and it was OK, and almost every gal wore a circle pin ? (we never really knew why, they wouldn't tell us). Green Lakes, Snooks Pond, Suburban Park and the Swan Pond? Going to a double feature, with cartoons and the Newsreel? Sending in box tops to get stuff? Dance class with Mr. Snell at the Fire Hall? Watching girls try to get on the school bus, with tight skirts & Cappezios? (sp?).....in winter! Friday fish days, 15.9 gas, flat tops, jelly rolls and butch wax? Rushing home from school to watch The Mickey Mouse Club? - and Annette, of course! When 78's were your Grandparents music, 33's were your parents music, and 45's were our music! The Chubby Checker school assembly? And lastly, when someone (Campy Tillman?) took the valve stems out of all the school bus tires?....and we got a "snow" day!

Happy Thanksgiving to all

I want to wish everyone a very happy thanksgiving and I hope you are able to relax and enjoy the long weekend. I will be at the largest car show in the southeast at Daytona International Speedway for the next three days viewing well over 5000 cars from the 70's back to the 20's. I will be having dinner with Jay Adcook and his family and watching a lot of football. Thanks to all of you who have contributed to this blog and I really hope we can "keep her goin"!!!

the manlius cinema is still open. it shows more of the artistic movies than the ones that we used to go see on friday. good grief, were we all there??

Speaking of the Manlius Cinema, here is a picture I took this past summer while in town for the 4th of July. I looked in the same old front doors and it was just like going back in time. The popcorn machine was on the left as well as the rest of the concession stand and it appeared to still have the bathrooms on the right. Not sure but I think it may have finally closed but perhaps someone from manlius can let us know for sure. I think we all spent a lot of time during our weekends here. And you may remember Weber's Department store to the right and "Pete the greek's" ice cream and soda shop on the left as I recall or maybe a bakery. Need a little help with that one. The next block east from Weber's was home to Leader's shoe store. I will let some else fill in the blanks on this one. Kerry

How come I don't remember those Halloween Pranks?

Hi All!
After reading about all your Halloween exploits I have to wonder where I was at the time - I don't recall any of that! I had lunch today with Nancy (Owens) and Cliff Altobellis at Hullars. It brought back a lot of memories of cherry cokes in the breakfast/lunch side! My Mom , at 90, moved one year ago and is now in Limestone Gardens in Manlius, so I don't go through Fayetteville as much as I used to and spend a lot more time in Manlius. It was good to read your blog Sharon. Are you still in Florida, and do you like it? We divide our time between Liverpool and Etowah, North Carolina, a small town near Asheville. We really love the mountains. We spend a month in Hawaii every other winter - will try to contact Lily next time we go which will be in 2009. Besides Nancy, I am in frequent contact with Cherie Fusco Maier. We used to spend hours hanging out at Irvs Pharmacy - checking out the guys - it was amazing how long we could make a coke last!!! I remember Friday night movies at the little cinema in Manlius - watching Elvis movies! I remember when neither of our parents wanted to drive us one Friday night, Cherie and I each told our parents that the other persons parents were driving both ways thinking we were really being clever and would take the bus - unfortunately one of the parents felt so guilty that they were not sharing the driving that they called the other and we were BUSTED!!! Grounded for I can't remember how long!

SNOW,You can have it all! It's 70 and sunny here in Monterey Bay ,CA
I still have nightmares about waking up to 3 FEET there in Syracuse.
I owned the "Drakes Cakes" franchise and had to be out in it delivering
"Ring Dings" and "Yodels" anyone remember them?

It was fun for sledding,snowmobiling and skiing.Now I have to settle for
Lake Tahoe Mountains (12,000 ft. and 30min. runs).

ok, sharon, here's another one that martha and i talk about. we used to walk from my house on fairfield st, to the village, then up f-m road all the way to suburban park. martha's uncle owned the tilt a whirl, so we could ride all day for free, and alot of the guys, dean, charlie locke (i think), cliff, maybe les mcdermott, and a bunch more worked there in the summers. then we'd get a ride home from one of them. can't imagine doing that today. i don't even think our parents knew where we were.
just thought of another one. again, with martha, we'd go to de witt, to see some of the boys, and tell our parents we were at a basketball game. then we'd get home, and get the score from wndr so we tell our parents who won.
we were bad, i think.

Halloween 1961

That was one of the biggest congregations of high school students ever in Fayetteville. Dr. Colasanti owned the strip mall at the top of the hill behind the then Mr. Steak. When he heard there was a "riot' in the upper village he drove down and he had his car spray painted and I believe a tire or two slashed. A few of the brave ones rode shopping carts down the hill as far as they could go. And who, especially those from the bogs(lower Fayetteville) could forget the best prank on October 31st. Remember all those cars that were set up on the Post Office steps every Halloween. One of the last ones I remember was a VW. But one of the most on-going things I remember about the time before and after Halloween was the smell of burning leaves as the smoke would waft throughout the Village. Keep on bloggin!!!

Tell Us More

I want to hear more from those of you who had adventures, like setting the pond on fire and having firecrackers in a pocket. I was clueless and my parents didn't let me do anything. I would have to argue with them to be allowed to go to away basketball games, forget about Halloween. On Halloween I mostly got to take my 7-years-younger twin siblings out at 6 pm so they could go trick or treating. Except one year when I was actually allowed to go with Bonnie Naylor and Cherie Fusco who both lived near my house on Huntleigh Drive. I usually spent evenings on the phone with Suzie Smith and Steve Muench translating Latin so Miss Evans wouldn't be cruel to us. And talking to Lily Armstrong about the important things in life.

I want to hear more from those of you who haven't posted anything even if you didn't have adventures either. Are you still working? Where do you live?

Barbie Becker Cook, How are you? My mother is now at East Side Manor - she forgets a lot now, but she can still remember the past and we enjoy visiting together the few times a year I get to Manlius.

Patty Anderson Begg, Jerry and I will be in Honolulu again this spring. We still talk about the wonderful time we had with you and your husband on our last visit there. That was so generous of you both to spend so much time with us showing us your island paradise. I drove by the house on Clinton Street where we both lived (at different times) and it looks the same as it did after my father put the cedar shakes on it. Someone who owned it after us expanded the garage. Remember the rhubarb behind the garage?

Lily, I just remembered the bakery near Rutkoff's and the cream filled pastries. Yum! We went on a binge for a while and went there nearly every day.

OK, so, someone else, maybe you remember something to share too.

I'm not sure how many may remember me as I only spent my senior year at F-M.
I did marry Joy Vickery and had three children (all still living in syracuse) You may remember
the "Crescents" our band including Glen Carey,Mike McCabe,Bob Fennelly and myself.
My friends (I remember best) in school were Wally Haskell & Eddie Ianuzzi

I now live in Monterey Bay,CA although I got here via Florida,Carolina &Connecticut.
Most of my career has been in the Insurance Industry and I still have a brokerage office.
I enjoy Golf,Fishing and Texas Hold-em. My wife Frieda and I enjoy traveling and have traveled through out Mexico and Alaska.

f-m kids arrested

don't know how many of you have seen it, but a bunch of seniors from f-m have been arrested on felony charges. i guess they broke into the school computer system, and got into teacher records, health records, and also changed marks, gpas and cheated on sats, etc. they are suspended now, and the hearings on them are beginning. i think a couple of graduates have also been arrested. been all over the papers here.

Well everything appears to be getting better and a big thank you to those of you who have sent items in. Don't stop and if you know anyone who is having problems let me know and I will do all I can to help. Also.....if you scroll all the way down to the bottom, you can drill into "older posts" and view earlier comments. And... as you read, others may comment, you can view the comments under each post. Forced to post!

It seems that technology has forced me to post, rather than just reading what the rest of you are saying. I was looking forward to reading what all of you have been doing without revealing that now that I am retired I pretty much play all day. I already had Blogger and Google accounts because I started a blog or two.When I logged in to the FM Blog, I appeared as "Sharon In the Kitchen" even though I would rather have been Sharon Nottingham for this. So now I am embarrassed that you can all see that although half a century has passed since high school, I still begin lots of things and then lose interest and move on to something else.

I started a blog for vegan recipes after we adopted a vegan diet a few years ago. Then I started a book review blog for the reviews I was writing for the Liverpool Public Library. Then I started a travel blog for the trip we will be taking in January. And then I stopped blogging until now.

Of course I remember you John Winter. If I had met you last week, who knows? But I remember you from fifth grade. Were you also in Miss Stack's class?

I was back in Manlius last week for a happy family event. My sister, my mother and Jerry's children and grandchildren still live in the F-M area so I visit a few times a year. There were still beautiful red, yellow and orange leaves on the trees, but no one had their heat turned on! It was colder inside the house than outdoors. Of course, if I still lived there, I would not have the heat turned on either.

This was easy to do, so I hope the rest of you will try it and tell us what you are doing.

Recently, I was diagnosed with A. A. A. D. D. – Age Activated Attention Deficit Disorder.
This is how it manifests itself:
I decide to water my garden.
As I turn on the hose in the driveway, I look over at my car and decide my car needs washing.
As I start toward the garage, I notice that there is mail on the porch table that I brought up from the mail box earlier.
I decide to go through the mail before I wash the car.
I lay my car keys down on the table, put the junk mail in the rubbish bin under the table, and notice that the bin is full.
So, I decide to put the bills back on the table and take out the rubbish first.
But then I think, since I'm going to be near the mailbox when I take out the garbage anyway, I may as well pay the bills first.
I take my check book off the table, and see that there is only one check left. My extra checks are in my desk in the study, so I go inside the house to my desk where I find the can of coke that I had been drinking.
I'm going to look for my checks, but first I need to push the coke aside so that I don't accidentally knock it over. I see that the coke is getting warm, and I decide I should put it in the refrigerator to keep it cold.
As I head toward the kitchen with the coke, a vase of flowers on the counter catches my eye: they need to be watered.
I place the coke down on the work surface, and I discover my reading glasses that I've been searching for all morning.
I decide I better put them back on my desk, but first I'm going to water the flowers.
I set the glasses back down on the work top, fill a container with water and suddenly I spot the TV remote. Someone has left it on the kitchen table.
I realize that tonight when I go to watch TV, I will be looking for the remote, but I won't remember that it's on the kitchen table, so I decide to put it back in the lounge where it belongs, but first I'll water the flowers.
I pour some water in the flowers, but quite a bit of it spills on the floor. So, I set the remote back down on the table, get some towels and wipe up the spill.
Then, I head down the hall trying to remember what I was planning to do.
At the end of the day:
The car isn't washed
The bills aren't paid
There is a warm can of coke sitting on the work surface
The flowers don't have enough water
There is still only one check in my check book
I can't find the remote
I can't find my glasses and I don't remember what I did with the car keys.
Then, when I try to figure out why nothing got done today, I'm really baffled because I know I was busy all day long, and I'm really tired. I realize this is a serious problem, and I'll try to get some help for it, but first I'll check my e-mail.
PS. I just remembered, I left the water running………………………………..

Do you remember me? I attended Fayetteville and F-M schools with y'all from 1952-1961, but left for bording school in the middle of our junior year. I claim honorary membership with the class of '62 for my 9 years service. In the photo at left my F-M jacket bears number 71, my J-V football number.

I eventually graduated from Syracuse on the five year plan, joined the Syracuse Police Department and retired as a Captain in 1991. We moved to Florida, I worked in probation down here, and now I'm adjusting to retirement with three kids, two grand kids, and a dog. Life is good.

Georgieanna Rowland
October 30, 2007 Georgieanna "Georgie" Patchett Rowland, 80, of Manlius, passed away Tuesday at Van Duyn Home and Hospital, after a courageous and lengthy battle with Alzheimer's disease. She was born in Lysander, the daughter of the late Georgeand Anna Patchett. She graduated from Baldwinsville Academy Senior High School in 1943 and Syracuse University in 1947. Georgie was passionate about teaching her entire life and was a language teacher in the Fayetteville-Manlius schools from 1953 to 1976. She then was a full-time substitute teacher until 1998. Georgie had maintained a lifelong relationship with many of her former students. She loved to travel and was an avid golfer and bridge player. She was a member of Pompey Hills Country Club, a former member of Cavalry Club, and a 60-year member of Kappa Delta sorority-Sigma Nu Chapter. Survivors: her beloved husband of 59 years, Frederick; a daughter, Lisa R. (Steven) Serling of Jamesville; two grandchildren, Sarah Serling of Boston, MA, and Molly Serling of Hoboken, NJ; and several nieces and nephews. Memorial Services: 1 p.m. Wednesday, November 21, 2007, at Newell-Fay Funeral Home. Visitation will be held prior to the service, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the funeral home, 8171 Cazenovia Rd.
